Co. Fermanagh,
Northern Ireland

Lough Erne PhotoCounty Fermanagh is a beautifully remote and sparsely populated region of Northern Ireland that lies inland, in the far southwest of the country.

Renowned for its scenic waterways, the landscape is dominated by Lough Erne, a huge lake that divides into two parts, the Lower and Upper loughs, both of which are filled with small wooded islands. A cruise on the water is the best way to take in the beauty of the lakelands region, and fishing and watersports are popular activities. Fermanagh is rich inWhite Island Photo ancient remains, with many ruins dating back to pre-Christian times. Devenish Island is one of the finest monastic sites in Northern Ireland, while striking carvings can be found on White Island and Boa Island, the latter of which contains a famous Celtic idol known as the Janus figure.

Situated in the middle of the lakes is the attractive county town of Enniskillen, which is home to a fine castle overlooking the lovely River Erne. The region's other attractions include the 18th century mansions of Castle Coole, a neoclassical building set in wonderful landscaped grounds, and Florence Court, a stately home that lies at the foot of the Cuilcagh Mountains. Below the surrounding limestone hills are the Marble Arch Caves, where a subterranean river takes visitors on a journey past spectacular rock formations.
