County Derry map
County Tyrone,
Northern Ireland

Sperrin Mountains Photo Tyrone is the largest county of Northern Ireland and lies inland, southwest of County Derry. It is bordered by Lough Neagh to the east, and by County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland to the west.

Despite its size, the region is one of the least explored parts of Northern Ireland, and is predominantly rural, with large areas of farming land. In the north are the wild and beautiful Sperrin Mountains, where exposed moors drop down to forested glens and river valleys, while further south are the lowlands thatBeaghmore Stone Circles Photo border the lakes of County Fermanagh. The region is great for outdoor enthusiasts, with the Sperrins offering many opportunities for walking and hiking, as well as recreational activities such as horse riding, mountain biking and fishing.

Tyrone is filled with a large number of prehistoric remains, and many standing stones, cairns and crosses can be found scattered around the countryside. The Beaghmore Stone Circles in the southeast of the Sperrins are particularly interesting, while the High Cross at Ardboe is one of the most impressive of its kind. Omagh, the county's largest town, is located close to two excellent open-air museums that recreate the region's past. The extensive Ulster American Folk Park tells the fascinating story of Irish emigrants to America in the 18th and 19th centuries, while the Ulster History Park focuses on the history of human settlement in Ireland.
