Crawfordsburn Country Park lies just west of Bangor, on the southern
shores of Belfast Lough in County Down.
The estate
once belonged to the Crawford family but is now publicly owned.
It is a wonderful place to stroll, with walking paths weaving
through a variety of beautiful scenery. The coastline stretches
from Helen's Bay to Grey Point, and is fringed with sweeping sandy
beaches - the best in the area. The park also contains wooded
glens with manydifferent species of tree, a cascading waterfall,
a pond, and wildflower meadows.
There are
a number of walks to choose from. The Glen Walk leads through
woodland up to the waterfall at the head of the glen, while the
Meadow Walk passes by the meadows and pond. A longer route follows
the coastline, from where there are lovely views over Belfast
Lough. It leads across meadows to headlands, beaches and shoreline.
There are interesting rock formations along the way, and the route
also runs past a gun emplacement, Grey Point Fort, dating from
the early 20th century. Information about trails can be found
in the park's visitor's centre, which also contains exhibitions
on the natural environment, wildlife and history of the area.
