Cushendall,
County Antrim |
|
The village of Cushendall lies on the County Antrim coast at the
meeting point of three of the nine famous Glens of Antrim.
Known as the
'Capital of the Glens', Cushendall makes a great base for exploring
the surrounding glens. The village is made up of attractive pastel-coloured
houses, with a golf course, and a lovely seafront where watersports
and yachting are popular summer activities. The tower in the village
centre is known as the Curfew Tower, and dates from 1817,
when it was built by the landlord of the village, Francis Turnley,
to contain rioters and drunks. Cushendall's pubs are famed for
their traditional Irish music and dancing, particularly in mid-August
when the town is host to the annual Glens of Antrim Festival.
The ruins
of Layde Church, which date from around 1300, lie in a secluded
valley just outside the village, and many of the famous MacDonnell
family are buried in the graveyard there. Overlooking the village
is the mysterious table topped Lurigethan Mountain; and Ossian's
Grave, a megalithic site said to be the grave of the legendary
Celtic warrior poet Ossian, is also nearby.
