County Antrim map
Cushendun,
County Antrim

Cushendun Photo The picturesque village of Cushendun lies on the County Antrim coast at the mouth of the River Dun.

Situated at the foot of Glendun, one of the famous nine Glens of Antrim, Cushendun makes a good base for exploring the surrounding coast and countryside. Much of the village was designed by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis (who famously created the Italianate fantasy village of Portmeirion in North Wales) between 1912 and 1925. Owned by the National Trust,Cushendun Photo Cushendun is characterised by quaint whitewashed Cornish-style cottages; and boasts a long, unspoilt sandy beach and pretty harbour. A festival week takes place at the end of July.

Surrounding the village, Glendun (meaning 'Brown Glen') is one of the most scenic of the nine glens, and is known as the glen of wild flowers, with lots of deciduous and evergreen woodland. You can walk along the river to the famous Glendun Viaduct, designed by Charles Lanyon in the 1830's; or visit the ruins of Castle Carra, which date from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The Neolithic court cairn known as Ossian's Grave is not far from Cushendun, while on the outskirts of the village is the mysterious Tiveragh hill, reputed to be the haunt of fairies.
