Denbigh Castle sits perched on a hill above the Vale of Clwyd, overlooking the town of Denbigh in the north Wales borderlands.

The ruins date from the 13th century, when a castle was built by Henry de Lacy (Earl of Lincoln) on the site of an earlier Welsh fortress as part of Edward I's campaign against the Welsh. Nothing remains of the original fortress, and today's castle - which was designed as part of a walled town - contains building work from two distinct periods, which were interrupted by the castle's momentary capture during the Welsh revolt at the end of the 13th century.

The outer southern and western defences date from the earliest period of construction, while the latter work can be recognised by the different coloured stone and the angular towers. The most striking feature of the castle is the magnificent four storey gatehouse, which has an unusual triangular arrangement of polygonal towers and was influenced by the designs of Edward I's great military architect, Master James of St George. The castle was besieged during the Civil War and finally surrendered after six months, falling into disrepair in subsequent years.
