Derry City,
County Derry

Derry Photo Northern Ireland's second largest city, Derry, lies at the end of Lough Foyle, close to the border with the Irish Republic.

The city was renamed 'Londonderry' under British rule, but has a predominantly Catholic population and is generally referred to as 'Derry'. It is a vibrant place, both historical and modern, with a thriving arts scene. Derry's 17th century city walls are some of the best preserved in Europe, having famously withstood a long and terrible siege in 1688-89. Derry is often called the 'Maiden City'Derry Photo as a reference its unbreached walls. A walk around the walls, which are about a mile long, takes about an hour and is a great way to see the city's layout.

It was in Derry that the Bloody Sunday massacre took place in 1972, and the Catholic area known as Bogside in the west has many poignant murals relating to the Troubles of Northern Ireland. The east bank of the River Foyle, known as Waterside, is the main Protestant/Loyalist area. The city's cannons can be found around the Guildhall, an impressive neo-Gothic building, while St Columb's Cathedral has some of the best views of the old city from its tower (which was used as a lookout post during the siege). Also inside the old city walls is the excellent Tower Museum, which charts the details of Derry's long and eventful history.
