Derry Coast,

The north coast of County Derry, which is more remote and less
widely visited than the Causeway Coast in nearby County Antrim,
is made up of miles of glorious sandy beaches backed by dramatic
cliffs and headlands.
Close to the
border with Antrim is the attractive seaside town of Portstewart,
while further west is the smaller resort of Castlerock, which
has a long beach that is popular with surfers. Further along the
coast, two miles west of Castlerock, is the Downhill Estate,
where lovely gardens form the backdrop to the spectacular setting
of the Mussenden Temple. The hamlet of Downhill is situated by
a large sandy beach, while nearby, Downhill Forest has many trails
for walking and cycling.
The sweeping
dune-backed beach of Benone Strand (or Magilligan beach) stretches
west from Downhill for seven miles to the tip of the peninsula
at Magilligan Point, where a Martello tower dating from the Napoleonic
Wars overlooks the entrance to Lough Foyle. Adjacent to the beach
(which is the longest in Ireland) are many caravanning and camping
sites, and a ferry runs from Magilligan Point across to County
Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. At the foot of Lough Foyle
to the south lies the city of Derry.
