Devon is a popular holiday destination, with its warm climate,
tranquil stretches of coastline, lovely countryside, and quaint
villages giving it a timeless appeal.
Devon's main
coastal spots include the 'English Riviera' resorts of Torquay
(birthplace of Agatha Christie), Paignton and Brixham in the south,
the resorts of Ilfracombe and Woolacombe in the more rugged north,
and the quieter, pleasant resort of Sidmouth in East Devon. For
picture-perfect villages, nothing beats charming Clovelly, not
far from the rocky headland of Hartland
Point in the north. Many attractive villages can also be found
in the in the southern region of Devon - known as the South Hams
- between Torquay and Plymouth.
Devon's inland
natural landscapes are some of Britain's most stunning areas of
natural beauty. The sweeping, heather-clad hills of Exmoor National
Park, located on Devon's northeastern border, are filled with
a diverse array of wildlife, while the sea-cliffs and pretty bays
along the coastline are spectacularly scenic. There are also medieval
villages, fishing harbours, small towns and resorts, as well as
an abundance of forests, moorland and valleys. For explorers seeking
a more desolate experience of romantic wilderness, Devon is also
home to Dartmoor National Park.
