The native Welsh Dinefwr Castle lies in the Dinefwr parkland surrounding Newton House. It is located just west of Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, south Wales.

The castle sits in a strategic position on a rocky crag over the Tywi River, and was the seat of the Welsh rulers of Deheubarth. There are references to a castle on the site in the 12th century during the period of Welsh leader Rhys ap Gruffydd, although the circular keep dates from the 13th century. After Edward I's conquest of Wales, the castle passed to the English crown. It was renovated after being badly damaged in a siege led by Owain Glyndwr in 1403, but its military function was lost, and in the 15th century it was abandoned in favour of a new stately home at nearby Newton House.

Only a shell of the castle remains, although the restored battlemented wall-walk commands wonderful views over the Tywi Valley, and the surrounding parkland (maintained by the National Trust) is peaceful and scenic. The present Newton House lies nearby and dates from the 17th century, with a Gothic façade that was added during Victorian times.
