Wales location map
Dolgellau,
North Wales, UK

Cadair Idris Photo Dolgellau is a small market town beautifully situated by the magnificent Mawddach estuary on the northwest coast of Wales. It lies at the foot of the Cadair Idris mountain range in Southern Snowdonia, and is an excellent base for walking in the surrounding area.

Dolgellau was once the county town of Meirionnydd, and was where Owain Glyndwr held the last Welsh Parliament in 1404. It was also the hub of the Quaker movement in the 17th century,Coed y Brenin Photoalthough nowadays most people come to the town for outdoor activities. There are many routes from Dolgellau to the summit of Cadair Idris, the third most popular peak in Wales. The rugged Rhinog mountains are situated north of Dolgellau, and offer remote and quiet walking away from the more heavily frequented main peaks of Snowdonia.

As well as walking, mountain biking is extremely popular in Dolgellau. Just north of the town is Coed y Brenin forest, which is one of the top mountain biking venues in Wales, with over 100km of tracks through the forest's river valleys and hills. Dolgellau is also close to the Cardigan coast, with the beautiful Mawddach Trail - also terrific for scenic walks and cycling - running along the estuary, and linking up to the attractive seaside resort of Barmouth 15km away.
