Situated off the tourist trail in the southwest of Scotland is
the beautiful, unspoilt region of Dumfries and Galloway.
The scenic
Solway coast stretching along the south is milder than elsewhere
in Scotland and has many fine beaches, while the area is also
the setting of the spectacularly picturesque Caerverlock Castle,
one of Scotland's finest castles.
Dating from the 13th century, the castle has a moat and drawbridge,
as well as a unique triangular plan, while inside you can find
ornamental Renaissance
stonework that was added by the first Earl of Nithsdale in the
17th century.
The region
also has many pleasant towns and villages. The town of Castle
Douglas is located at the north end of Carlingwark Loch where
you can boat and sail, while nearby are the lovely Threave Gardens
and the atmospheric 14th century tower of Threave Castle, built
on a small island in the River Dee.
The town of Dumfries has plenty of Robert Burns museums for fans
of the Scottish poet while Wigtown, recognised by the Scottish
Parliament as Scotland's National Book Town, is famous for its
array of bookshops and is host to an annual Book Fair in May.
