Southern Scotland location map
Dunbar,
East Lothian

Dunbar is a seaside town in East Lothian, located on the attractive southeastern coast of Scotland, 30 miles from Edinburgh.

Dunbar became a popular seaside and golfing resort back in the 19th century, and today it is a pleasant place to visit, renowned for having a greater than average amount of sunshine. The explorer and naturalist John Muir was born in Dunbar in 1838. His interest in conservation led him to establish the national park system in the United States, and the John Muir Birthplace - a three-storey building on the High Street - contains a museum focusing on his life and work.
A country park named after Muir stretches west along the coast from beautiful Belhaven Bay to the picturesque white sands of Tynninghame, and is a haven for wildlife and birds.

Behind the High Street, the harbour is an atmospheric spot from where to take in the coastal views and watch the seagulls nesting on the scant remains of Dunbar's once mighty castle. Although little remains of the fortress today, it withstood many sieges throughout the years, and provided sanctuary to Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th century. If you follow the coastal path over the hill you can see the site of the old outdoor swimming pool where holiday-makers once took to the water. An indoor pool now stands nearby. Dunbar is still a popular place for golfers; other notable attractions include the ruins of Tantallon Castle which lie 12 miles to the northwest.
