Dunseverick Castle Nr Dunseverick, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland, UK.

The scant remains of Dunseverick Castle lie on an isolated headland overlooking the sea, just east of the Giant's Causeway on the beautiful Causeway Coast in County Antrim.

Dunseverick was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Dalriada (which spread from northern Antrim to Scotland) and was linked by road to Tara, the seat of the Kings of Ireland until the 11th century. As well as having ties with Irish legends, the site is said to have been visited by Saint Patrick. The Irish raids on Scotland were launched from Dunseverick Castle in the 5th century, and the fort later became a stronghold of the Earls of Antrim.

The castle was destroyed by Cromwell's army in the 1650's, and only some meagre ruins of the 16th century gatehouse now remain. There is a small picnic area nearby, and a scenic coastal path runs west to the Giant's Causeway and east to the amazing Carrick-a-Rede rope suspension bridge at Ballintoy. In pretty Dunseverick harbour is a museum with local marine exhibits and artefacts from the Spanish Armada.
