Enniskillen
is the county town of Fermanagh, and is located on the natural
island separating the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne.
The town
was once a centre of colonial power, and its two royal regiments,
the Inniskilling Dragoons and the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers,
played an important part in the victory at the Battle of the Boyne.
Today, with its mixture of Victorian and Edwardian buildings,
fine churches, and striking castle dating from the 15th century,
the town has
retained its historic charm, and makes an excellent base for exploring
the beautiful surrounding countryside of the lakelands.
The Buttermarket
is a refurbished old marketplace which houses a craft and design
centre, and is great for browsing. Overlooking the town to the
northwest is the Portora Royal School, founded by Charles I, where
both Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett were pupils. In the east,
Cole's Monument in Forthill Park has superb views from its tower.
Below the park, the recently built Clinton Peace Centre (named
after the former US President) stands on the site of the terrible
IRA bombing which killed eleven people and injured 61 more on
Remembrance Day in 1987. The centre is used for conferences, and
houses a youth hostel and art gallery. Just outside Enniskillen
is Castle Coole.
