Enniskillen Castle Photo Enniskillen Castle lies on the banks of the picturesque River Erne on the western side of the town of Enniskillen, in the lakelands of County Fermanagh.

A fortress was originally built on the site in the 15th century by the Gaelic Maguire chieftains who ruled Fermanagh, although the castle was rebuilt and refurbished in the early 17th century when it came under the ownership of Captain William Cole, an English planter. The distinctive twin-turreted building known as the Watergate dates from this time. Enniskillen Castle Photo The Cole family moved to Florence Court in the 18th century, after which the castle was remodelled and used as military barracks, which can be seen surrounding the keep.

The castle houses two museums. The Regimental Museum of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers is located in the 15th century castle keep, and has an extensive collection of military artefacts - including uniforms, weapons and medals - relating to the town's famous regiment, which was formed in 1689. The Fermanagh County Museum examines the history, wildlife and landscape of the area through award-winning displays and audio-visual programmes, and also holds a range of special exhibitions throughout the year.
