Ffestiniog Railway
Porthmadog, Gwynedd, LL49 9NF, Wales, UK.
Tel. 44 (0)1766 51600

Ffestiniog Railway Photo The region of Snowdonia in north Wales was once an important mining area, and has several narrow-gauge steam railways, of which the Ffestiniog Railway is one of the most famous.

The railway was one of the earliest railways to be built, and was used during the 19th century to shift slate from the mines in Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour town of Porthmadog on the west coast. It is undoubtedly one of Wales' most scenic rides, winding thirteen miles through rural landscape, Ffestiniog Railway Photo with breathtaking views of tranquil countryside backed by sweeping snow-capped mountains. The line was built from 1832-36, but abandoned in 1946 when the demand for slate had decreased.

Reconstruction was begun by a group of volunteers in 1954, and by the early 1980's the final route had been completed, with almost all of the original locomotives still functioning. The vintage engines and carriages of today date back to the mid-19th century, and provide a unique travel experience. From the wharf at Porthmadog the train ascends 650ft into the mountains surrounding Blaenau Ffestiniog. The wooded valleys of the Vale of Ffestiniog around Blaenau are beautiful for walking, and there is a path which you can follow along the train line.
