Fforest Fawr,
Mid-Wales, UK

Fforest Fawr Photo Lying in the western part of Brecon Beacons National Park, the Fforest Fawr (Great Forest) was named after an area that was once a medieval royal hunting ground.

Fforest Fawr is a place of untamed, treeless moorland and steep rocky gorges and ridges, with plunging waterfalls and some of Wales' largest limestone caves. The hamlet of Ystradfellte is a popular base for walks, being surrounded by wonderful rugged scenery.Ystradfellte Photo There is a footpath known as the Waterfalls Walk along the River Mellte that leads past many caves and waterfalls. You can watch the water tumbling into the biggest cave entrance in Wales at Porth-yr-Ogof Cave, where there is a calcite formation in the rocks known as the 'White Horse'. Further on are a series of impressive waterfalls.

West of Ystradfellte, the spectacular Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves are the largest showcave complex in Western Europe. Discovered in 1912, the limestone caverns are home to underground lakes, waterfalls, incredible rock formations and even Bronze Age skeletons. There are also many historic sites in the Fforest Fawr area, such as the captivating diamond shaped standing stone of Maen Llia, which lies in an isolated spot north of Ystradfellte.
