Giant's Causeway Photo The Giant's Causeway is an amazing geological formation, and a World Heritage Site, that lies on the Causeway Coast near Portballintrae in County Antrim.

The Causeway is one of Northern Ireland's most famous landmarks, and has been a site of scientific interest for years, as well as the subject of many myths and legends. Caused by the cooling of volcanic lava 60 million years ago, the formation is made up of around 40,000 mostly hexagonal basalt columns. It is a fascinating sight, and was declaredGiant's Causeway Photo one of the great natural wonders of the world by the Royal Geographical Society back in 1693.

The tops of the columns form stepping stones into the sea, and legend says that the mythological giant, Finn MacCool, laid the Causeway as a path across the sea to the Hebridean Isles so he could reach his Scottish love on Staffa. The tallest columns are as high as 12m, while the solidified lava in the cliffs is up to 28m thick. A coastal path with dramatic sea views leads 12 miles from the site to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge at Ballintoy. There is also a narrow-gauge railway running from nearby Bushmills whisky distillery to the Causeway. The Causeway's visitor centre has facilities for tourists and information about the site.
