Giant's Ring
Ballynahatty, Co. Down, N. Ireland, UK.

Giant's Ring Photo The Giant's Ring is a famous prehistoric site located on a plateau in the Lagan Valley, four miles south of Belfast, in County Down.

The site consists of a very well-preserved circular earthwork, known as a henge monument, that is almost 600ft in diameter. Inside the grassy embankment is a megalithic chamber that is believed to have once been part of a passage tomb. A large capstone, which is slightly tilted, rests on five upright stones. The site dates from Neolithic times,Giant's Ring Photo and is one of the largest prehistoric enclosures in Ireland, covering ten acres. The banks of the enclosure are as high as 4m in places, and five entrances are visible (although not all of them are original).

Little is known about the exact purpose of these atmospheric remains, although from the positioning of the ditch and wall it seems unlikely that the ring was intended as a defensive structure. A ceremonial function is more probable. The site was used as a horse racing circuit in the 18th century, and today it is popular with strollers and picnickers. There are wonderful views over the surrounding countryside from the top of the embankment.
