Glens of Antrim,
County Antrim |
|
Fringing the scenic County Antrim Coast are the Glens of Antrim.
Made up of nine glens (the main ones are Glenariff, Glenballyemon,
Glenaan, Glencorp and Glendun), the area is one of wild and remote
natural beauty. Even Glencorp, meaning 'Glen of the Dead', shows
little sign of barrenness.
The Glens
were one of the last places in Northern Ireland where Gaelic was
spoken and are rich in history and folklore, with ancient sites
scattered throughout the valleys and moors.
With spectacular views over to Rathlin Island and the Mull of
Kintyre in Scotland, the glens are great for walking, and the
charming coastal villages of Cushendall and nearby Cushendun make
good bases for exploring the area.
The largest
glen is Glenariff, known as the 'Queen of the Glens', a huge U-shaped
valley in which the moors taper towards dramatic headlands dropping
down to the coast, with a wide beach at the village of Waterfoot.
In the upper part of the glen, cascading waterfalls fall hundreds
of feet within deep wooded gorges. The Glenariff Forest Park has
a campsite and waymarked trails, and is home to lots of wildlife.
