Harlech Castle Photo Harlech lies on a beautiful stretch of the Cambrian Coast in Southern Snowdonia, North Wales. Perched on an outcrop overlooking Tremadog Bay at the northern end of Cardigan Bay, the tiny town is dominated by its majestic castle.

One of Edward I's 'Iron Ring' of fortresses, Harlech Castle's commanding battlements appear to grow out of the 200ft crag on which it sits. Before the sea receded it was well-protected on its coastal side, and withstood famous sieges throughout the years.Harlech PhotoLike the castles of Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Conwy, Harlech Castle is now a World Heritage Site, and its dramatic cliff-top location overlooking sweeping sandy dunes adds to its appeal. There are breathtaking panoramic views from the castle's ramparts, with the Lleyn Peninsula and the Snowdon and Cadair Idris range visible on a clear day.

You can walk along the battlements, and the gatehouse houses an exhibition chronicling the castle's turbulent history. There is also a championship golf club at Harlech, and although the town is small, there are plenty of craft shops, tearooms and restaurants within the narrow streets of the town. The coastline is well worth exploring, with glorious beaches running for miles along the coast. Below Harlech, Ardudwy Beach (some of which is naturist) stretches south to the picturesque and popular seaside resort of Barmouth.
