Wales location map
Holy Island,
North Wales, UK

Trearddur Bay Photo Holy Island, separated by a narrow stretch of water from the mainland of Anglesey in North Wales, has some spectacular coastal scenery, with rugged cliffs and sheltered bays and beaches fringing the island's shores.

Many people head straight to Holyhead to catch the ferry to Dublin although south of Holyhead, on the island's southern shore, Trearddur Bay is a popular holiday resort with a beautiful beach surrounded by rocky coastline and cliffs.South Stack Photo Anglesey is renowned for its rich concentration of prehistoric sites, and flanking the base of Holyhead Mountain are the well-preserved Iron Age circular huts of Ty Mawr. A climb up the mountain is worth it for the spectacular views of nearby Snowdonia, with the impressive Iron Age hillfort of Caer y Twr standing on its 720ft summit.

On Holy Island's west coast there are many scenic walks around the heathery cliffs at South Stack, where you will find some of the oldest rocks in Wales, dating from the pre-Cambrian period. The area is also a haven for birdlife, with guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, puffins and even Peregrine falcons nesting in the cliffs by the lighthouse. The Ellin's Tower Seabird Centre offers an amazing chance to watch the vast numbers of seabirds breeding during summer.
