Kensington
High Street is one of London’s upper class areas with a
varied selection of boutiques, bespoke trinket stores and colourful
trendy cafes.
Kensington
is better known though for Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace
– home of Princess Diana before her untimely passing. Kensington
Gardens covers and impressive 275 acres and was originally part
of Hyde Park. In 1689 King William III bought part of the Hyde
Park grounds and commissioned the building of the Palace. The
current
management seek to maintain the gardens as a refuge for the working
class – an area of beauty, stillness and recuperation.
Successions of royalty
commissioned varying ground and building improvements. Queen Victoria
commissioned the Italian Gardens and the Albert Memorial. Princess
Louise, Queen Victoria’s daughter sculpted a statue of the
Queen to celebrate 50 years of her reign. Nearby, in Hyde Park
lies one of London’s most popular tourist attractions –
the Diana Memorial Fountain. The memorial is designed to symbolise
Diana’s qualities, especially her openness.
