Wales location map
Knighton,
Mid-Wales, UK

Knighton Photo Twenty miles northeast of Llandrindod Wells on the banks of the River Teme is the small historic town of Knighton. Straddling the England/Wales border, Knighton's Welsh name is Tref-y-Clawdd, meaning 'Town On The Dyke', a reference to the famous 8th century earthworks of Offa's Dyke.

The dyke, a popular walking route, stretches all the way from the Severn Estuary in the south to Prestatyn on the north coast, and runs through Knighton,Knighton Photo which is the approximate halfway point along its course. The earthworks of the ancient border reach as high as 20ft in places, and walkers flock to the attractive town for this reason, with an exhibition on display at the Offa's Dyke Heritage Centre.

Knighton was also the location of one of Welsh rebel Owain Glyndwr most famous victories against the English at the beginning of the 15th century. The town itself has atmospheric hilly, winding streets, a striking 19th century clock tower, and an old castle mound. The Narrows are a series of picturesque streets with 17th century half timbered houses, and lots of antiques, crafts and gifts. Near Knighton is the UK's only Spaceguard Centre, an observatory monitoring 'near earth objects', which has planetarium shows, telescopic views of the galaxy, and a Camera Obscura.
