Laugharne,
South Wales, UK

Dylan Thomas Boathouse Photo The pretty village of Laugharne lies on the western side of the Taf Estuary in Carmarthenshire, south Wales. It is well known for being the birthplace of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, and is surrounded by lovely scenery.

The neat rows of Georgian houses and the coastal location make Laugharne an attractive spot, while the estuary contains a variety of bird life. You can walk along the estuary path to the Dylan Thomas Boathouse whereLaugharne Castle Photo Thomas lived and worked during his latter years for an insight into the poet's life; or visit the local pub he frequented. Thomas is buried in St Martin's Churchyard in the village centre.

Perched on a hill above the estuary overlooking the village are the crumbling sandstone remains of Laugharne Castle. The ruins are mainly 16th century, although some of the building dates from the 12th century. Thomas used to write in the gazebo of the castle when it came under the ownership of his friend, writer Richard Hughes, and a climb up to the site is worth it for the sensational views. Many believe Laugharne to be the inspiration for the fictional town of Llareggub in Thomas' Under Milk Wood, although others argue that it was based on New Quay in mid-Wales.
