Legananny Dolmen
Leitrim, Co. Down, N. Ireland, UK.

Legananny Dolmen Photo The Legananny dolmen is one of the most famous Stone Age monuments in Northern Ireland, and stands in a remote location on the southern slopes of the Slieve Croob mountain range, near the village of Leitrim in County Down.

The megalithic monument, which resembles a huge tripod, is an impressive granite portal tomb believed to date from around 5000 years ago. Renowned for its wonderful structure, it seems appropriate that the dolmen was called a giant's grave, although it is likely toLegananny Dolmen Photo have been the grave of a local chieftain. The massive capstone weighs about 40 tons and is almost 2ft in diameter. It is supported by two stones to the south that are both around 6ft in height. A further single stone measuring 4ft supports the north end.

Urns have been uncovered underneath the dolmen, and there is evidence that a cairn once existed. The stones would have been dragged from elsewhere to be erected on the site. The location itself is surrounded by wild hills, with the Mourne Mountains visible to the south. Routes to the dolmen, which is sandwiched between a small back road and a stone wall, are signposted.
