Lisburn is located southwest of Belfast in the Lagan Valley area, straddling both
counties Antrim and Down.
Recently given city
status, Lisburn was once an important linen centre. The Huguenots established
the industry - which went on to become crucial to Ulster's economy - in the 17th
century. Lisburn's most interesting attraction is the Irish Linen Centre and Museum,
situated in Market Square, which tells the tale of linen production through vivid
displays and contains a wealth of information
about
the history of the region. A fire destroyed many of Lisburn's buildings in the
early 1700's: the cathedral, which dates from 1623, was reconstructed after this
time.
The pedestrianized
streets of today provide good shopping facilities. By the River Lagan, the newly
constructed Island Arts Centre is a venue for artistic and cultural events. If
you're looking for a peaceful pastime, you can take a cruise along the river on
the Lagan Belle canal boat. Just a mile north of Lisburn, set in a courtyard of
a Georgian mansion that once belonged to a linen baron, the Hilden Brewery offers
guided tours and ale sampling.
