Llanberis Pass Photo The town of Llanberis is one of the main bases for walking within the Snowdonia National Park. Set in a stunning location just northeast of Snowdon, surrounded by mountains and fringed by two lakes, it is the start of the Snowdon Mountain Railway which runs five miles to the mountain's summit.

The cliff-faces of the beautiful Llanberis Pass are used as training ground for Everest, and at the end of the valley is Pen-y-Pass, the starting point for the main walks up to Snowdon.Llanberis Railway Photo The town's lakes are popular for watersports and walks, and on a wooded hill near the lakes is the lovely ruin of Dolbadarn Castle, a Welsh castle built in the 13th century by Llywelyn the Great.

Llanberis was once a slate mining town and, overlooking the lake, the Welsh Slate Museum is housed in the old Victorian workshops of the Dinorwig Slate Quarries. At the beginning of the 20th century the quarries were one of the largest in Wales, employing around 3000 men. You can also take a 40-minute trip along the lake's shore on the Llanberis Lake Railway, which runs along a stretch of the line once used to transport the slate to the coast. More recently, Electric Mountain offers the opportunity to descend into the mountain's tunnels and visit the dramatic Dinorwig underground hydroelectric power station.
