Llandeilo,
South Wales, UK |
|
The attractive small market town of Llandeilo lies on the banks
of the Twyi River on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
in Carmarthenshire.
The town has
a relaxed atmosphere, with pretty Georgian buildings lining its
narrow streets. Llandeilo's handsome 19th century one-arched stone
bridge - said to be the largest single span stone bridge in Wales
- stretches over the River Tywi, joining onto the town's main
street. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Carmarthenshire's
rolling green hills,
it is a great spot for taking in the tranquil beauty of south
Wales, and has a number of attractions nearby.
The ruins
of Dinefwr Castle stand close to the town in parkland owned by
the National Trust. Newton House, which dates back to the 16th
century, lies in the centre of the grounds, and there is also
a deer park. Perched majestically on a huge crag a few miles southeast
of Llandeilo are the ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle. The views
of the Tywi Valley, the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountain
from the castle's summit are breathtaking, and it is easy to see
why the ruins of Carreg Cennen are regarded as some of the most
romantic in Wales.
