Llandrindod Wells,
Mid-Wales, UK

Llandrindod Wells Photo Situated on a mountainside plateau in the heart of mid-Wales is Llandrindod Wells, a plush spa resort that became fashionably grand in the 19th century, and is now the administrative centre of the county of Powys.

The town's lavish Victorian architecture is perfectly preserved, with tall, turreted houses boasting red brick facades and ornate cast-iron balconies. The elegant buildings loom majestically over Llandrindod's wide, tree lined streets and spacious, manicured green parks.Llandrindod Lake Photo Although the town declined when spas went out of fashion, you can still taste the water at the Chalybeate spring and visit the restored Rock Spa Pump Room and Pavilion in the town's lovely Rock Park.

The town holds a week-long Victorian festival every August when the residents dress up and conduct business in full period costume. Entertainers take to the streets, and there are evening performances and shows as well. Llandrindod also has a heritage town walk, and is home to both the Radnorshire Museum, and the National Cycle Exhibition, which is housed in the showroom of the Automobile Palace and has a huge collection of bicycles. Just outside the town are the remains of the Roman fort of Castell Collen. The Royal Welsh Show, the largest agricultural show in the UK, is held in July each year at the nearby village of Llanelwedd.
