Across the estuary from Conwy on the north Wales coast is the
elegant Victorian seaside town of Llandudno, Wales' largest coastal
holiday resort. Lying between the limestone headlands of the Little
and Great Orme, and backed by the mountains of Snowdonia, Llandudno's
scenic location enhances its spacious, unspoilt charm.
There are
two main beaches surrounding the town: the sweeping crescent sandy
bay of the North Shore, which is overlooked by the Victorian terrace
stretching along the seafront promenade,
and the quieter sand dunes of the West Shore. The curving Victorian
Pier on the north side is beautifully decorated in wrought iron,
and is the longest in Wales at 2295ft.
For truly
spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and coast take
a trip - either by car, by vintage tramway, or by cable car -
to the 680ft summit of the Great Orme. A popular spot for climbing
and golf, the Great Orme is home to many species of wildflowers,
butterflies, birds and wildlife and is also a site of Special
Scientific Interest, boasting many Neolithic remains. You can
take a guided tour around the Great Orme Ancient Copper Mines,
which are the only Bronze Age copper mines in Europe open to the
public.
