Llangollen Photo On a riverside setting among the wooded hillsides of the beautiful Dee Valley in North Wales is Llangollen, an attractive market town that has been popular with visitors from as far back as the Romantic period.

Nowadays Llangollen is famous for being the venue of the International Musical Eisteddfod held every July, when folk dancers and singers from all over the world arrive in droves to take part in the performances. One of the best ways to take in the scenery is to ride along the canal on a horse drawnLlangollen Photo boat from Llangollen Wharf, or take a boat over Thomas Telford's amazing 38m-high Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. You can also take a trip on the Llangollen Steam Railway which chugs eight miles through the Dee Valley to Carrog, passing the weir at Horseshoe Falls.

For the more adventurous, the gorge's rapids are ideal for rafting, canoeing and kayaking, and there are also facilities for other outdoor activities like rock climbing. Just outside the town centre is Plas Newydd, the 18th century residence of the notorious Ladies of Llangollen, while perched on a hilltop commanding marvellous views over the town and valley are the medieval remains of Castell Dinas Bran. The lovely ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey are also nearby. Llangollen's stone bridge is one of the reputed 'Seven Wonders of Wales'.
