Llanidloes,
Mid-Wales, UK

Llanidloes Photo In the heart of the old county of Montgomeryshire, which is now the northern part of Powys, is the pretty market town and artists' colony of Llanidloes. The small town lies on the banks of the River Severn, and is surrounded by some of mid-Wales' most magnificently wild and remote scenery.

Llanidloes became a centre for weaving back in the 19th century, and now attracts many artists, craftspeople and hippies. The half timbered market hall, dating from 1609, lies in the heart of the town,Llanidloes Photo with streets branching off which are filled with a variety of interesting shops. The town contains many Tudor-style black and white timbered houses, and has a laid-back, ambient feel to it.

The Town Hall houses the Museum of Local History and Industry, with an exhibition on the Red Kite, which was once an endangered species but is now flourishing again in the area. Nearby, Hafren Forest is home to the majestic bird, although south of Llanidloes, at the gateway to the beautiful Elan Valley, Rhayader is the best place to go to observe Red Kites in protected nesting sites. Rising up behind Llanidloes, the Plynlimon Hills are good for walking, and there are also scenic walks near the man-made reservoir of Llyn Clywedog, which boasts the tallest dam in Britain.
