The medieval ruins of Llanthony Priory lie beside the River Honddu
in the lovely Vale of Ewyas, at the foot of the Black Mountains
in mid-Wales.
The Augustinian
priory dates from the beginning of the 12th century, when it was
rebuilt on the site of an earlier structure, none of which now
remains. Despite suffering damage as a consequence of various
wars and revolts, the ruins (which were left to decay after the
Dissolution in the 16th century) are well preserved.
Particularly
striking is the elegant arcade of the north aisle, and the south
transept of the building is also impressive.
The Abbey
Hotel incorporates some of the surviving abbey buildings, and
contains an atmospheric vaulted crypt bar. The 13th century parish
church of St Mary lies nearby, and fragments of the priory gatehouse
can also be seen in the surrounding area. Beautiful, wild countryside
and mountains surround the secluded spot, enhancing the romantic
atmosphere of the ruins. The site is also close to the Wales/England
border, with Offa's Dyke Path running along the ridge above the
valley.
