Llanwrtyd Wells,
Mid-Wales, UK

Llanwrtyd Wells Photo Set in pretty surroundings on the River Irfon in mid-Wales, the old spa town of Llanwrtyd Wells is officially the smallest town in Britain, with a population of around 600. The town is now a centre for outdoor activities, and makes a great base for exploring the lovely surrounding hills and mountains.

Welsh is widely spoken in Llanwrtyd Wells, and the town is renowned for its host of bizarre festivals and events, including a Man versus Horse marathonBog Snorkelling Photo and the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. Although visitors no longer come for the spa waters, the sulphur-scented spring at Ffynnon Ddrewllyd (meaning 'stinking well') still exists. The healing properties of the odorous water were discovered back in 1732 by the local vicar, Theophilus Evans, who claimed the spring had cured his scurvy.

Around the town is excellent walking country, with the Epynt and Cambrian Mountains soaring above peaceful valleys and green pastures. The area is noted for being home of the Red Kite, attracting many bird watchers; and fishing, pony trekking and mountain biking are also popular activities. For amazing views of the isolated surroundings you can follow the winding 14-mile old drovers road of the Abergwesyn Pass that weaves from the hamlet of Abergwesyn, just north of Llanwrtyd, through enchanting scenery and desolate moors towards the Cambrian Coast.
