County Derry map
Lough Erne,
Co. Fermanagh

Lough Erne Photo50 miles long and up to six miles wide, beautiful Lough Erne in County Fermanagh is one of the largest waterways in the UK. It is divided into two parts, the Lower and Upper, which are joined by the River Erne.

The Lower Lough is located in the north, while the Upper Lough lies further south. A good way to sightsee is to take a cruise or hire a boat: the area is home to many birds, and is excellent for fishing. Watersports are a popular activity, and facilities for canoeing, windsurfing and sailing can be found in the area.Devenish Island Photo Lough Erne is also filled with a large number of islands, many of which contain pagan and Christian remains. The earliest settlers in the region found natural protection from invaders in the maze of waterways, and remnants of ancient times are plentiful.

The Lower Lough contains most of the interesting islands, including Devenish Island in the south, which is one of the most important Christian sites in Ireland, and boasts a wide array of medieval monastic ruins. White Island is home to a collection of enigmatic carved figures, and is located further north, while in the far north of the lough is Boa Island, which contains the famous Janus figure. Close to Boa Island is the island of Lusty Beg, a popular resort.
