Spread over the central heartlands of Wales, mid-Wales consists
of three regions: Brecons Beacons in the south, Ceredigion to
the west and Powys to the east.
With some
of the country's most scenic and isolated countryside, fringed
by miles of unspoilt coastline and mountainous terrain, the wild
beauty of the area makes it one of Wales' most exhilarating places
to visit. Brecons Beacons is famous for its flat-topped summits,
and the national park is filled with fantastic
walking routes, as well as some of the best mountain biking trails
in the UK.
The coast
along the southern part of Cardigan Bay in Ceredigion has many
pleasant seaside resorts, including Aberystwyth, the cosmopolitan
'capital' of mid-Wales. Inland are the Cambrian Mountains, while
further west Powys is the largest but one of the most remote and
sparsely populated parts of Wales. A vast area of natural beauty,
with the lush river valleys of the Severn, Wye and Usk weaving
through its countryside, Powys is renowned for being the land
of the red kite, a species of bird once nearly extinct. The area
is home to many historical towns and villages, which make great
bases for exploring the surrounding hills, valleys, forests and
beautiful lakes.
