The National Library of Wales is the largest library of Wales, and sits on Penglais Hill above the town of Aberystwyth in mid-Wales.

Founded in 1907, the library is housed in a magnificent neo-classical building surrounded by lovely gardens, close to the town centre and seafront. It is one of only six copyright libraries in the UK, and since 1911 has been entitled to receive a copy of every book published in Britain and Ireland. It holds a stupendously huge collection of over 4 million printed volumes, and has many manuscripts, archives, photographs, paintings, maps, sound recordings and moving images from all over the world.

Significant Welsh publications such as the 12th century Black Book of Carmarthen - the oldest surviving manuscript in the Welsh language - can be found in the library, while the map collection is the largest in the country. There are over a million maps, including many historical and antiquarian specimens, and a collection of sea charts. The museums also houses both permanent and temporary exhibitions, and lectures and other events are arranged throughout the year.
