Bodelwyddan Castle, Denbighshire, LL18 5YA, Wales, UK.Tel. 44 (0)1745 584060

Bodelwyddan Castle Photo The National Portrait Gallery of Wales is housed in Bodelwyddan Castle, located south of the seaside resort of Rhyl in north Wales.

Set in 260 acres of parkland, the striking 19th castle sits on a hill surrounded by landscaped gardens and woodland. The Victorian interiors are filled with portraits from the 19th century collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London, as well as furniture from the Victoria and Albert Museum, and sculpture from the Royal Academy of Arts.Bodelwyddan Castle Photo The first floor galleries have been refurbished and contain innovative interactive displays, as well as temporary exhibitions, while the downstairs rooms house the main paintings.

The Dining Room contains works by John Singer Sargent, William Holman Hunt and Ford Madox Brown, and is furnished with a collection of pieces - including a grand piano - designed by the Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse (famous for the Natural History Museum in London). The vaulted drawing room has been turned into a sculpture gallery, while 'Watts Hall of Fame' is a William Morris styled corridor, lined with portraits by George Frederic Watts of eminent Victorians such as Rossetti and Browning. The castle's gardens are open to public and contain many walks and nature trails. Visitors can also see the trenches that were used for training during the First World War.
