The Ness Wood Country Park lies in the steep, wooded glen of the
Burntollet Valley, southeast of the city of Derry.
The park comprises
50 hectares of mixed woodland, including oak, birch, ash, elm,
rowan, holly, hazel, alder and willow. Most of the woodland is
natural, although some non-native species - such as beech, sycamore,
larch, silver fir, sweet chestnut, cherry laurel and rhododendron
- have been planted in areas where native trees were felled in
the past. Running through the remarkable forest are
many nature trails, and the park is currently undergoing development,
with some of the walking paths due to be renovated and re-opened
again in the future.
The area is
the habitat of many different species of wildlife and birdlife:
red squirrels, hares, otters, badgers and buzzards can all be
found in the woodland. Also situated within Ness Wood is a spectacular
waterfall - the highest in Ulster - after which the park takes
its name (the word 'ness' derives from the Irish word 'an las',
meaning 'waterfall'). To the south of Ness Wood the landscape
becomes wilder and more rugged towards the Sperrin Mountains.
