Perched on top of a hill overlooking Cardigan Bay on a lovely
stretch of the West Wales Coast is the pretty seaside resort of
New Quay. With idyllic sandy beaches and miles of unspoilt coastline,
it is no surprise New Quay is a popular holiday destination.
The resort
comes alive in summer, with sailing and walking (the Ceredigion
Coastal Path runs along Cardigan Bay) being two of the town's
main attractions. From the cobbled harbour, New Quay's narrow
terraced streets wind up the hillside,
where there are spectacular views of the town and coastline. On
top of New Quay Head it is possible to see as far north as Snowdonia
and the Lleyn Peninsula on clear days. You can also gaze at the
razorbills and guillemots which cluster on Bird Rock.
Cardigan Bay
is famous for its marine wildlife, and a boat trip along the Ceredigion
Marine Heritage Coast provides an opportunity for some dolphin
watching, with seals and sea birds also in abundance. There is
a Marine Wildlife Centre in the town, which has lots of information
and displays. New Quay is also reputedly the original Llareggub
in Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, and a Dylan Thomas Trail
visits the haunts that inspired much of the poet's work.
