Newquay, Cornwall is one of the most popular beach resorts in
the UK. It’s miles of golden sand and choppy seas make it
a Mecca for families and surfers alike.
Warmed by
the Gulf Stream (the Blue Reef Aquarium highlights the local marine
life), the climate resembles that of Mainland Europe. Eleven beaches
find their home in and around the area, offering an array of attractions
including secluded crags, water sports and lifeguard protection
facilities in the summer months. Fistral beach has made Newquay
famous
for
surfing, with international competitions being regularly held
at the resort.
In 1439 Bishop
Lacey of Exeter permitted the ‘burghers’ of what was
then called Towan Blistra to build a ‘New Quay’. This
signalled the towns’ evolvement into becoming a progressive
fishing port and illicit ‘smugglers den’. This developed
from the onset of the industrial revolution and increased trade
with the Far East and the Americas. Hardly any fishing goes on
present day and the most important avenue of local revenue is
now tourism.
