North Down Heritage Centre Photo The North Down Heritage Centre is located not far from Belfast in Bangor, on the north coast of County Down.

The heritage centre lies behind Bangor Castle (which is now the Town Hall) in Castle Park, and houses displays and artefacts tracing Bangor's history from early Christian times to the 1950's, when the town became a popular seaside resort. Exhibits include a huge reconstruction of Bangor Abbey, which was founded in the 6th century by St Comgall and was historically significant for 800 years, North Down Heritage Centre Photo although nothing remains of the building today. A surviving relic is the 7th century Antiphonary of Bangor - one of the oldest-known ecclesiastical manuscripts - which is displayed in Milan's Ambrosian Library. A facsimile of it can be found in the heritage centre.

Other historical artefacts include an engraved handbell from the 9th century, and the Ballycroghan Bronze Age swords, which date from 500AD. There is an exhibition devoted to the work of Irish songwriter Percy French, with memorabilia such as letters, diaries, photographs and original watercolours on display. The museum houses a range of temporary exhibitions and audiovisual shows, and there is also an observation beehive and a café on the site.
