North Wales
Coast, UK

Llandudno Pier Photo Wales' north coast became popular with holiday-makers in the 19th century when seaside resorts sprung up alongside the small fishing villages. The North Wales Path stretches along the coast all the way from the university city of Bangor on the Menai Strait in the west, to the resort of Prestatyn in the east.

The medieval walled town of Conwy and the charming Victorian seaside town of Llandudno, which is the largest of Wales' coastal holiday resorts, are east of Bangor and backed by the stunning mountains ofColwyn Bay Photo Snowdonia. Seven miles south of Llandudno, covering 80 acres in the Conwy Valley, is the beautiful Bodnant Garden, one of the most famous gardens in the UK.

The modern seaside resorts of Colwyn Bay, Rhyl and Prestatyn are further east along the coast, and are more brash and commercialised than genteel Llandudno. Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea have facilities for golf and are near the Welsh Mountain Zoo, while you will find plenty of amusement parks and distractions at funfair-packed Rhyl and Prestatyn, which are linked by a six mile beach. Prestatyn, the more sedate of the two, is at the northern end of Offa's Dyke Path, and is surrounded by great walking country, with the heathery mountains and green hills of the Clwydian Range - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - close by.
