Omagh is the largest town in County Tyrone, and is located in
the middle of the county, at the point where the rivers Drumragh
and Camowen merge to form the Strule.
The town was
the site of one of the worst atrocities committed during the Troubles
of Northern Ireland, when, on August 15th 1998, a car bomb exploded,
killing and injuring many people. The bomb was planted by a dissident
Republican group called the Real IRA. 29 people in total were
killed, while more
than 200 were injured, and the bombing was denounced by both sides
of the divide. The Market Street area where the bomb went off
is still in the process of reconstruction.
The spires
of Omagh's Catholic church rise elegantly above the town, while
in the town centre is a neoclassical courthouse dating from the
19th century. Although there is not a huge range of things to
do and see, Omagh is good for eating out, and Irish traditional
music can be found at the Dun Uladh Cultrual Heritage Centre of
Ulster just outside town. Nearby attractions include the excellent
open-air museum of the Ulster American Folk Park, and the Gortin
Glen Forest Park, both of which lie to the north.
