St. Petroc arrived on the Southwest tip of England from Ireland
in the 6th Century and founded a monastery, hence the name Petroc-stowe
which became Padstow.
By far the
most popular fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall, this
traditional seaside town contains Rick Stein’s famous seafood
restaurant. It offers all the local seafood delicacies available.
An OBE, (awarded for his services to Cornish tourism) Stein has
run the restaurant for more than 25 years. This original restaurant
has spawned two others – 
St
Petroc’s Bistro which offers a cheaper but lighter version
of his original menu. In addition, Rick Stein’s Café,
which is more casual in nature.
Watching the
boats potter in an out of the harbour is a sublime way to pass
the time in this tranquil environment. Ferry trips across the
Camel estuary are popular with sealife a plenty in the clear,
blue water. Padstow is also known for the Obby Oss festival on
the first of May every year, which welcomes in summer. A local
in a horse costume dances through the streets while being chased
by a ‘teaser’ waving a club in a tradition that dates
back to an old fertility rite.
