Pembroke,
South Wales, UK |
|
Lying above the River Pembroke in south Wales is the old county
town of Pembroke. The town makes a good base for exploring the
Pembrokeshire National Park, with the surrounding coastline being
some of the finest in Wales.
Pembroke was
a medieval walled town, and the soaring bulk of its fine castle
is its main attraction. A mighty Norman stronghold that was the
birthplace of Henry VII and the seat of the Tudor dynasty, the
castle sits on a rocky headland,
its impressive structure dominated by a massive looming stone
keep. The views over the town and countryside from the top of
the castle's tower are terrific, while inside are a variety of
rooms, some of which house exhibitions relating to the castle's
history. The castle is also a venue for many different events
throughout the summer.
The town itself
contains a mixture of Georgian and Victorian architecture, and
near the castle is the curious, privately run Museum of the Home,
an eccentric collection of knick-knacks dating back to the 18th
century. Lovely Carew Castle, which was developed from a medieval
fortress to an Elizabethan manor, is nearby, lying with its tidal
mill on the River Carew just east of Pembroke.
