Penrhyn Castle

Penrhyn Castle Photo Two miles east of Bangor is the resplendent Penrhyn Castle, a neo-Norman 19th century stately home built on the site of a Welsh castle, and set within 45 acres of parkland.

Overlooking the sea with amazing views of the Snowdonia mountains to the south, the extravagant building (now owned by the National Trust) was designed by Thomas Hopper and built between 1820 and 1845 for the prosperous Pennant family, who were the owners of the Penrhyn Slate Quarry. Penrhyn Castle Photo The luxurious interiors contain impressive Norman-styled furnishings, and house a wonderful collection of private paintings, including works by Gainsborough and Rembrandt. There is also a one-ton slate bed that was made for Queen Victoria.

As well as the opulently decorated main rooms, with their ornate panelling and plasterwork, you can explore the less grand Victorian kitchen and servants' quarters. In the stable yard are an Industrial Railway Museum - with 19th century locomotives and steam engines - and a fascinating Doll Museum. The expansive grounds contain many wooded walks, and there is also a beautiful Victorian walled garden filled with tropical plants.
