Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber
Nevern, Fishguard,
Pembrokeshire,
Wales, UK.

Pentre Ifan Photo Pentre Ifan is the most famous Bronze Age megalithic site in Wales. Dating back to about 3000BC, the stones of the burial chamber are perched on a hilltop a few miles south of Newport, in south Wales.

Overlooking the Nevern Valley with spectacular views the Fishguard Bay area, the location of the site is wonderful, creating a serene beauty that enhances the mystery of the standing stones themselves. The earth mound of the original structure has eroded away, Pentre Ifan Photo leaving a huge 16ft long capstone that is supported by the tips of three large upright stones. The delicate appearance of the structure belies its strength, as the balancing capstone is estimated to weigh more than 16 tons. Surrounding the site are more stones, which may be the remnants of other long gone chambers.

The chamber, or cromlech as it is known in Welsh, is thought to have been used as a tomb for the communal burial of the dead. The majestic size of the monument, as well as the lovely setting, make it one of Pembrokeshire's highlights. The surrounding Preseli Hills are filled with many other prehistoric remains, and are excellent for walking.
